Multi Generational Living
Top estate agents are reporting a 30% increase in the number of enquiries they receive for properties suitable for Multi Generational Living (MGL). It makes a lot of sense for an increasing number of people to combine resources and for up to 3 or 4 generations to live under one roof.
The benefits of this lifestyle suit families where babysitters are needed regularly or where elderly relatives need support due to ill health or physical difficulty. However, the main factor driving this revived trend is the current economic climate and a need to make financial resources stretch further. There has been a steady growth of 27% more people living like this in the last 10 years but experts agree that this will speed up as austerity measures and pension adjustments take effect.
Typically, UK based families drawn to this way of life tend to look for large Victorian properties with lots of rooms and space which can be divided and shared amongst the family members. Whilst these properties seem to be ideal, actually living in them as a large united family can be difficult. Insufficient parking, limited bathroom space and steep staircases are the things most complain about.
Taking the self build option to MGL is a smarter approach. Plans can be so clever as to disguise the property into looking like one, but in fact can easily be split into a pair of non-identical semi detached homes. This gives greater scope for the future when perhaps the next generation will need to downsize.
Media rooms, play rooms, garages as well as the granny annex can all be incorporated. Gardens, pools, en suites and the rest can all be included at a relatively low cost when compared to transforming an existing property for Multi Generational Living.
